Memories That Will Last a Lifetime
Our high school girls’ softball team recently embarked on an extraordinary journey to the Dominican Republic, and what a trip it turned out to be! From thrilling games and cultural immersion to heartwarming community service, every moment was a testament to the power of sport and shared experiences. Here’s a day-by-day breakdown of our unforgettable week!
Day 1: Arrival and Warm Welcome
The excitement was palpable as our team touched down in the Dominican Republic after a red-eye flight from Panama. The adventure began at the Emotions By Hodelpa resort in Juan Dolio, where the girls quickly rejuvenated with a poolside snack before diving into their first activities.
Our dedicated coaching staff led the girls through a mini stretch and workout routine to shake off the travel fatigue. We then made our way to the local sandlot where the Delfinas, our host team for the week, greeted us with warmth and enthusiasm. The practice was a blend of introductions in Spanish, friendly catch, and taking ground balls, setting the stage for a week of camaraderie and competition.
The evening concluded with a delicious buffet dinner and a special hat and jersey ceremony led by MLB pitcher Pedro Liriano and Coaches Aria Pogni and Tatum Maytorena. Despite the long day, our players’ energy and positivity were unmatched. If Day 1 was any indication, the rest of the trip promised to be incredible!
Day 2: Friendship, Fun and Service
Day 2 was a whirlwind of activity, embodying our “Play, Live, and Give” motto. The day started with a refreshing swim in the Caribbean, followed by a significant “Give” activity. Our team worked diligently to sort, prep, and pack nearly 500 pounds of gently used equipment for donation throughout the week.
After this crucial service project, we set off for Santo Domingo. A highlight of the day was visiting the MLB Museum in Boca Chica, where the girls marveled at the history of baseball. A particularly memorable moment was spotting Coach Pedro Liriano’s trading card on the “Baseball Card Wall,” a proud reminder of his legacy.
The day continued with a scenic hike through Tres Ojos National Park. The clear waters, coral walkways, and hand-drawn boat rides between the pools & underground caves provided a magical experience that our team will cherish forever.
As the sun set, we headed to the University of Santo Domingo for our first game. The energy at the park was electric as both teams exchanged high fives and introductions in their home languages. The game was a thrilling back-and-forth battle with big hits and impressive plays. Our team emerged victorious with a final score of 11-7, setting a positive tone for the week ahead.
Day 3: Yankees and Youth Clinic
Day 3 was one of the most impactful of the trip. We began with a tour of the New York Yankees Academy, led by player development coordinator Melissa Hernandez. Her inspiring story as a trailblazer in Major League Baseball resonated deeply with our girls. Meeting Yankees strength and conditioning coaches, education coordinators, and MLB players was a profound experience, showcasing the many opportunities available in the world of professional sports.
In the afternoon, we hosted our annual free youth softball clinic in Guayacanes, drawing over 50 local girls. The clinic was a huge success, filled with softball drills, smiles, and camaraderie. Each participant received a donation bag with softball gear, further promoting the sport we all love.
The day wrapped up with a lively post-clinic game featuring long drives, big smiles, and plenty of post-game hugs. The interaction between our players and the local girls was heartwarming, underscoring the joy of sharing our passion for softball.
Day 4: Paradise Found
On Day 4, we ventured to Saona Island, a true Caribbean paradise. The island’s crystal-clear waters, powdery white sand, and stunning natural beauty were a feast for the eyes. Learning that Saona Island had been a filming location for *Pirates of the Caribbean* added an extra layer of excitement to our visit.
After enjoying a delicious Dominican lunch by the sea, the team relaxed and soaked in the island’s beauty. This day of relaxation and exploration was a perfect contrast to our action-packed schedule, allowing everyone to recharge before the next big day.
Day 5: Community Outreach and The Biggest Night Game Ever
Day 5 embodied our “Play, Live & Give” motto in the most impactful way. We journeyed to Coach Pedro Liriano’s hometown, where his community welcomed us with open arms. Pedro, the only player from his small town to make it to the Major Leagues, took the girls on a tour of his childhood home, his baseball academy, and his church, which provides essential social services.
Witnessing the living conditions and the community’s needs was an eye-opening experience for everyone. Our girls were actively involved in distributing food packages, donating clothing, and engaging with local children through handwritten greeting cards.
The evening’s highlight was the second annual women’s softball night game at Liga Aneja field. The atmosphere was electric with thousands of fans filling the stands. The game was streamed live, and the excitement on the field was matched only by the vibrant energy from the crowd. Our team’s victory was significant, but the true triumph was the unity and connection fostered through the game. The night ended with a donation of used equipment and a post-game meal for the host team, reinforcing our commitment to giving back.
Day 6: Facing the Junior National Team
On our final day, we played two games against the Dominican Junior National Team, a squad that had competed on the world stage in the Central American Games. Our players gave their all, with standout performances from Maya Antonelli and Fallon Norman. The competition was fierce, and while we came up short in both games, the experience was invaluable. The DR National Team’s pursuit of making their first-ever appearance at the 2028 Olympics was inspiring and offered our girls a glimpse into the dedication required for international success.
The trip concluded with our annual awards ceremony, where each player was honored by Coach Pedro Liriano, along with Coaches Aria Pogni and Tatum Maytorena. The ceremony was filled with heartfelt reflections as players shared their most memorable moments and life lessons learned from the trip.
The sentiments expressed—such as recognizing the importance of gratitude and the power of smiles to bridge language barriers—were a testament to the transformative nature of the experience.
Wrapping Up an Unbelievable Summer
This Dominican Republic adventure was more than just a trip; it was a profound journey of cultural exchange, personal growth, and community impact. To all the parents, players, coaches, and friends who made this possible, we extend our deepest gratitude. This summer was unforgettable, and we look forward to sharing this experience with more softball players in the future. Stay tuned for updates on how you can be a part of our next incredible journey!
